Atlanta’s Biggest Holiday Traditions

Things We Like to Do, Even Without a White Christmas

The old-timers said it was beautiful. The last time it snowed in Atlanta on Christmas day was in 1910. So, although it’s lovely, and it remains the largest selling Christmas record of all time, Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” is a little exotic for us in a way. We have 217 days a year of sun here, so our Christmases find their glow from within.

Yes, we leave the sleigh rides to our friends up north, but we have a lot of other ways to celebrate our holidays in Atlanta, and we go at it with a lively passion.

A Christmas Walk in the Garden

Maybe one of the better examples of what we can do here for the holidays that might not be attempted in snowy city is the Garden Lights Holiday Nights happening at Atlanta Botanical Garden.

In an innovative way to enjoy a holiday stroll, our treasured Atlanta Botanical Garden has orchestrated Nature’s Wonders, a new display that shows us the world’s natural phenomena through the artful use of dancing, synchronized lights, countless strands of them, high over Storza Woods. A Tunnel of Light and a Walk of Flames are Atlanta favorites, along with spectacular exhibits like the Glittering Galaxy, Radiant Rainforest, and Orchestral Orbs.

The Garden at night is breathtaking when these holiday customs light up, and once you see them you’re pretty certain to put Garden Lights Holiday Nights on your Christmas list of things not to miss.

Atlanta Ballet’s Own Nutcracker

For many, the sound of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker is as sure a signal of the holidays as any Christmas carol. This year, Atlanta Ballet presents its time-honored, much-loved production for the last time, before mounting an all-new look of costumes, sets, and choreography in 2018. Led by guest conductor Ari Pelto, the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra will make the years fall away when they bring the timeless phrases of Tchaikovsky’s score back to our waiting ears. The exquisite choreography honors the traditions of the beloved ballet and, at the same time, showcases young Atlanta dancers and distinguished guest artists alike.
